Synesthesia-related refers to phenomena, experiences, and traits associated with synesthesia, a perceptual condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway triggers automatic experiences in a second pathway. These experiences are typically involuntary, durable, and consistent over time.

Common forms observed in synesthesia include grapheme-color synesthesia, where letters or digits evoke colors, and sound-color synesthesia, where sounds trigger color experiences. Other forms reported by researchers include sequence-space, wherein ordered sequences are perceived as spatial arrangements; personification, in which ordinal concepts acquire personalities; and forms linking taste or touch to sensory properties like color or shape.

Origins involve both genetic and neurodevelopmental factors. The leading explanations emphasize cross-activation between neighboring sensory areas or disinhibition of feedback between regions, producing concurrent percepts. Onset typically occurs in childhood and the experiences tend to remain stable across the lifespan.

Prevalence estimates commonly place synesthesia at about 4% of the population, though figures vary by method. Synesthesia is not considered a disorder; most people report neutral or positive experiences and some describe benefits for memory or creativity. In research, synesthesia is studied using self-report and consistency tests, sometimes complemented by neuroimaging to examine neural connectivity.
