Syndicans

Syndicans are a group of ancient Greek colonists who settled in the region of Sicily during the 8th century BCE. They are believed to have been the first Greeks to establish a permanent settlement in Sicily, which was then known as Magna Graecia. The term "syndicans" is derived from the Greek word "syndicos," meaning "commissioner" or "delegate," reflecting their role as representatives of the Greek city-states in Sicily.

The origins of the syndicans are not entirely clear, but they are thought to have come from various Greek city-states, including Corinth, Megara, and Athens. They were driven by economic and political factors, seeking new lands to settle and exploit. The first syndican colony was established around 734 BCE, marking the beginning of Greek colonization in Sicily.

The syndicans played a significant role in the development of Sicily's early history. They introduced Greek cultural, political, and economic systems to the island, which had a profound impact on its subsequent development. The syndicans also established trade routes and alliances with other Greek colonies in the region, contributing to the growth of Magna Graecia.
