Synapsittuvat are a class of neurons identified in Finnish neuroscientific literature that display synchronized, oscillatory synaptic activity in response to external stimuli. The term combines the English word synapse, meaning the junction between neurons, with the Finnish suffix "-ttuvat," which denotes a characteristic quality. Researchers first described synapsittuvat in the late 1990s while studying hippocampal networks in laboratory rats. Subsequent work has confirmed similar patterns in the prefrontal cortex and in cultured human neurons.

Characteristic features include temporally precise firing patterns that align across a population of cells, spike‑timing dependent plasticity that strengthens or weakens connections based on intracellular calcium dynamics, and a capacity for persistent oscillation over several seconds. These properties differentiate synapsittuvat from synapses that undergo transient facilitation or depression. In vivo recordings show that synapsittuvat contribute to the generation of theta rhythms in the hippocampus, which are thought to be involved in memory consolidation.
