Symphysisbetegség

Symphysisbetegség, more commonly known as pubic symphysis dysfunction (PSD) or symphysis pubis dysfunction, refers to pain and discomfort experienced in the pubic symphysis joint, located at the front of the pelvis. This condition is particularly prevalent during pregnancy and the postpartum period, although it can affect individuals regardless of gender or pregnancy status.

The pubic symphysis is a cartilaginous joint connecting the left and right pubic bones. During pregnancy, hormonal changes, such as an increase in relaxin, can cause the ligaments supporting this joint to loosen. This laxity, combined with the growing weight of the fetus and changes in posture, can lead to excessive movement and instability in the symphysis pubis, resulting in pain.

Symptoms of symphysisbetegség typically include a dull ache or sharp pain in the pubic bone area, which may radiate to the thighs, groin, or lower back. Pain often worsens with activities that put pressure on the pelvis, such as walking, climbing stairs, standing on one leg, or spreading the legs apart. Difficulty with everyday movements like getting out of bed or putting on trousers is also common.

Diagnosis is usually made based on the patient's reported symptoms and a physical examination. Imaging studies like ultrasound or MRI may be used in some cases to assess the degree of separation or damage to the joint. Treatment focuses on pain management and improving pelvic stability. This often involves rest, avoiding aggravating activities, physical therapy to strengthen core and pelvic floor muscles, and the use of a pelvic support belt. In most cases, symptoms improve significantly after childbirth.
