Symmetrier

Symmetrier is a formal framework used in mathematics and theoretical physics to describe a class of transformations that preserve designated invariants of a system. It generalizes conventional symmetry by focusing on invariant properties or relations rather than exact equivalence alone.

Formally, let X be a set of configurations and I a collection of invariants on X. A symmetrier is a map f: X → X such that i(x) = i(f(x)) for every x in X and every invariant i in I. The set S of all symmetriers acts on X by composition, and S often forms a monoid, and a group when inverses exist. Orbits under this action classify configurations by their invariant profiles.

Approximate variants allow invariants to be preserved within a tolerance, yielding fuzzy symmetrier concepts useful in noisy data and soft robotics.

Examples include geometric isometries, which preserve distances and angles; in graphics and data analysis, symmetry-preserving transforms that retain structural statistics; and in chemistry and crystallography, symmetry operations that conserve geometric invariants of molecules and lattices.

Applications span object classification by symmetry content, analysis of dynamical systems, and the design of algorithms that exploit symmetry to reduce computational complexity. The framework also supports hierarchical invariants, enabling multi-level analyses of systems with layered symmetry properties.
