Sylph

A sylph is a term used to describe an elemental spirit associated with the air in Western esoteric and literary traditions. In the Paracelsian system of alchemy and natural philosophy, sylphs are the invisible beings that inhabit and govern the air, and they are typically grouped with the other elemental intelligences—gnomes of earth, undines of water, and salamanders of fire. The concept frames the atmosphere as alive with sentient forces.

The word is generally regarded as having been coined by the Swiss physician Paracelsus in the 16th century, though its exact linguistic origins are unclear. The form and idea quickly spread through Renaissance and early modern literature and occult writings, influencing later poetic and artistic depictions of air as a living, guiding presence.

In literature and the arts, sylphs are often portrayed as ethereal, winged, and delicate beings. They appear as guardian air-spirts in Alexander Pope’s mock-epic The Rape of the Lock, where they attend Belinda and oversee the propriety of the event from the air. In Romantic and later works, sylphs commonly symbolize lightness, mobility, and the intangible qualities associated with the air element. The concept also inspired the Romantic ballet La Sylphide (1832), which centers on a sylph-like figure.

In contemporary fantasy, sylphs are frequently used as a creature type or race associated with air, often appearing in role-playing games and fantasy novels as scholars, messengers, or elemental beings. The term has also entered broader usage to describe someone who is slender and ethereal in appearance, though this usage is more literary than scientific.
