SwitzerlandEU refers to the complex and evolving relationship between Switzerland and the European Union. Switzerland is a sovereign nation and a member of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), but not a member of the European Union. Despite not being an EU member, Switzerland maintains close ties with the EU through a series of bilateral agreements. These agreements cover a wide range of areas, including trade, free movement of people, transport, and research.

The cornerstone of the bilateral relationship is the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons, which allows Swiss citizens to live and work in EU countries and EU citizens to do the same in Switzerland. This agreement is highly valued by both sides, but it also presents political challenges within Switzerland due to concerns about immigration.
