The methodology involves comparing the Swadesh lists of different languages. Researchers look for cognates, words that share a common etymological origin, and analyze patterns of sound change. By examining these cognates, linguists can infer relationships between languages, estimate divergence times, and reconstruct proto-languages. The greater the number of shared cognates from a Swadesh list between two languages, the closer their presumed historical relationship.

While the Swadesh list approach has been instrumental in establishing the historical relationships of many language families, it is not without its limitations.
