Svetainje is a traditional Slavic and Eastern Orthodox Christian custom observed primarily in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, and other regions with significant Orthodox Christian populations. The term "svetainje" (Светање) translates to "holy awakening" or "holy vigil," and it refers to the nighttime celebration preceding major Christian feast days, particularly those associated with the Nativity of Jesus Christ, such as Christmas (Božić) and the Epiphany (Krst).

The tradition involves a communal gathering where participants stay awake throughout the night, engaging in prayer, singing hymns, and sharing stories. This vigil symbolizes the watchfulness of the shepherds who awaited the birth of Christ, as described in the Gospel of Luke. The night is often filled with religious chants, such as the *Kolo*, a circular dance accompanied by folk music, which reinforces the sense of community and devotion.
