Suurikiteisiin

Suurikiteisiin are a distinct group of large pegmatite bodies primarily located in the Finnish Lapland region. These pegmatites stand out for their exceptional size, often reaching several metres in thickness, and for the richness of their mineral assemblages. The term "suurikiteisiin" is the plural form in Finnish of "suurikite," which directly translates to "large crystal," and it is used by geologists to refer collectively to these massive granitic intrusions.

The formation of suurikiteisiin is linked to the late-stage granitic magmatism that occurred during the Precambrian Svecofennian orogeny. As the parent magma cooled slowly in the upper crust, volatile-rich fluids were released, promoting the growth of large, well-formed crystals of quartz, feldspar, mica, and a variety of accessory minerals such as topaz, tourmaline, and massive rare earth element inclusions. Their fine‐grained matrix often contains abundant xenocrysts, providing valuable information about the tectonic evolution of the region.

Because of their size and mineral diversity, suurikiteisiin have attracted scientific interest for both petrological studies and for mining exploration. The high concentrations of rare earth elements, in particular, have led to the development of pilot extraction projects aimed at recovering these critical raw materials. Moreover, the visually striking appearance of these pegmatites has made them a popular attraction for both educational field trips and gem cutting endeavors.
