The name is inspired by the German adjective reich, meaning rich or abundant, signaling that the system is dominated by the suspended particles rather than the liquid continuous phase.

Key characteristics include a high volumetric loading of solids, typically tens of percent or more, depending on particle size and density; pronounced non-Newtonian rheology such as yield stress, shear-thinning, or shear-thickening; and stability challenges related to sedimentation, flocculation, and particle aggregation.
