This act of surrender is often a last resort when further combat is deemed futile or likely to result in unacceptable casualties. The decision to surrender can be influenced by a variety of factors, including overwhelming enemy superiority, lack of resources, severe casualties, or a desire to preserve civilian life.

The act of surrender is usually accompanied by specific protocols. In a military context, this often involves the laying down of arms, raising of a white flag, and designation of a representative to negotiate terms with the victor. International law, particularly the Geneva Conventions, provides guidelines for the humane treatment of prisoners of war and dictates that surrendering combatants should not be targeted.

However, the interpretation and application of surrender protocols can vary. In some instances, particularly in asymmetric warfare or situations with high levels of animosity, surrendering individuals may face mistreatment or summary execution, despite legal protections.
