Surfacedominated

Surfacedominated describes a regime in which surface phenomena determine the properties and behavior of a material or system, rather than the bulk. This predominance arises when characteristic lengths are small or when surface states and chemistries exert outsized influence on physical processes such as transport, reactivity, and phase stability.

Common cases include nanoparticles, quantum dots, nanowires, thin films, and two-dimensional materials, where the surface-to-volume ratio is large and surface effects such as adsorption, surface reconstruction, and electronic band bending shape outcomes. In electronics, surface states can pin the Fermi level or create surface recombination paths that govern conduction and device performance. In catalysis, active sites on surfaces control reaction rates and selectivity. In optics and plasmonics, surface plasmons and scattering at interfaces dominate light-matter interaction.

Quantitative indicators include a high surface-to-volume ratio, short characteristic lengths relative to diffusion or decay lengths, and measurable deviations of bulk properties (melting point, conductivity, optical spectra) from bulk values. Surface chemistry, adsorption energies, and defect densities become primary design variables.

Control strategies involve passivation, surface functionalization, epitaxial growth, and coating to tailor surface state density, chemistry, or roughness. Applications span catalysis, sensor technologies, energy storage and conversion, and nanoelectronics, where surface-dominated behavior enables novel functionalities. However, not all properties are surface-dominated; many systems exhibit a crossover between surface- and bulk-dominated regimes depending on size, temperature, and environment.
