Supistava

Supistava is a Croatian and Serbian term used primarily in civil engineering and structural geology to describe a specific type of subduction or compaction that occurs within sedimentary layers or engineered fill materials. The word derives from the verb *supistati*, meaning “to contract” or “to collapse”, and it describes the process by which a layered material or structure gradually becomes denser under mechanical or hydraulic pressure.

In geological contexts, supistava is observed in sequences of clastic sedimentary rocks where fine-grained deposits, such as shales or silts, are subjected to prolonged load from overlying strata. Over millennia, these layers compact, reducing porosity and increasing bulk density. Indicators of supistava in the field include diminished pore space, evidence of grain alignment, and a gradual reduction in the overall thickness of a sedimentary package. Geophysical surveys often detect the associated change in acoustic impedance and seismic velocity, and these signatures are used to infer subsidence rates and to evaluate potential aquifer integrity.

In the realm of engineered fill and road construction, supistava represents the stabilizing collapse that can occur when loose fill is compacted to a higher density. Proper compaction, often achieved by dynamic rollers or vibro-compaction equipment, is intended to induce supistava, thereby reducing future settlement and improving the load‐bearing capacity of the pavement structure. Poorly compacted fills may experience excessive or uneven supistava, leading to differential settlement, cracking, or the formation of voids that require remedial measures.

Because the rate and extent of supistava depend on material composition, moisture content, and load history, engineers use laboratory testing, field density measurements, and numerical modeling to estimate its effects.
