Supinläge

Supinläge refers to the position or posture in which a limb or body part is in supination. In anatomy, supination describes the rotation of the forearm so the palm faces upward, while in the context of the lower limb or foot it can describe a tendency for the foot to roll outward. The term is used to describe either an observed position or a design intention in orthotics.

In clinical practice, supinläge is noted during physical examination, gait analysis, and imaging when assessing mobility, muscle balance, and weight distribution. It can be a normal variant, particularly in children, or indicate a pattern of functional or structural supination that may influence ankle stability or the way pressure is distributed across the foot.

In orthopedic and podiatric contexts, supinläge also appears in relation to footwear and inserts. A supinlägg, or supination insole, refers to a device intended to influence foot postures and pressure distribution. The design and use of such inserts vary depending on the clinician’s assessment and the patient’s symptoms.

Assessment commonly involves visual inspection, gait analysis, and sometimes footprints or imaging to understand the degree and implications of supination. Management ranges from observation to physical therapy or footwear modifications, tailored to the underlying cause, severity of symptoms, and functional impact.
