Supertitles

Supertitles are a form of surtitling used in live performances, most commonly in opera and theatre, to display translated dialogue or libretto on a screen above the stage. This allows audiences who do not understand the original language of the performance to follow the text. The term "supertitles" is a portmanteau of "super" meaning above and "titles" meaning text.

The concept originated in opera. Early attempts involved projecting the libretto onto the stage during performances, but these were often distracting. The modern supertitle system, projected onto a screen positioned high above the stage, gained popularity in the late 20th century. The development of technology, particularly digital projection, made supertitles more practical and less obtrusive.

Supertitles are typically displayed line by line as the dialogue is sung or spoken. The translation aims to be concise and to convey the essence of the original text without significantly altering the dramatic timing. The placement and design of the supertitle screen are crucial to minimize distraction for the audience. While widely adopted, supertitles can still be a point of discussion among purists who believe they can detract from the aesthetic experience or the immersion in the original language. However, their widespread use demonstrates a commitment to accessibility and making opera and theatre more approachable for a broader audience.
