Sumoistas

Sumoistas are the athletes who compete in the sport of sumo wrestling. These individuals are known for their large physical stature, which is a significant advantage in the sport. Sumo wrestling is a ritualistic combat sport originating in Japan. Competitors, known as rikishi, aim to force their opponent out of a circular ring or to touch the ground with any body part other than the soles of their feet.

The training of sumoistas is rigorous and demanding. They typically live together in stables called heya, where they adhere to a strict daily regimen. This includes waking early, performing a highly disciplined training session, and then consuming a large, calorie-rich meal. Their diet is designed to promote weight gain, which is crucial for stability and power in the sumo ring.

Sumoistas follow a hierarchical structure within their stables, with senior wrestlers (sekitori) receiving preferential treatment over junior wrestlers (jonokuchi). The career of a sumoista is often short, with many retiring in their early to mid-thirties due to the physical toll of the sport. Despite the physical demands, sumo remains a deeply cultural and respected sport in Japan, and its practitioners are highly regarded.
