The measure can be applied to a full aggregate or to sectoral decompositions, depending on data availability and research interest.

Calculation and data sources typically rely on national accounts data for consumption expenditure, such as household final consumption expenditure and, in broader formulations, private or total consumption series. Researchers may use seasonally adjusted, inflation-adjusted (real) series, or nominal figures with deflation as appropriate.
