It is described as forming in hydrothermal veins within ultramafic rock, often associated with minerals such as pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and pentlandite. The mineral is said to crystallize in the monoclinic system, typically producing prismatic to tabular crystals, and to have a Mohs hardness around 5.5 to 6. It may display a metallic streak and a relatively high specific gravity.

The name sulgude is usually attributed to the hypothetical language of the Sul region, combining roots for sulfur and glow. In the fictional economy surrounding sulgude, the mineral is valued for copper and trace metal content, and its reflective surface is used in pigments and decorative inlays in certain cultures. In speculative technology narratives, sulgude is imagined as having electrical conductivity and heat stability that make it a candidate for lightweight alloying alloys or energy storage research, though such applications remain fictional.
