Suffruticosa

Suffruticosa is a botanical term describing a growth habit in which a plant remains perennial and woody at the base but bears herbaceous or semi-woody shoots above ground. The term derives from Latin suffrutex, meaning "semi-woody" or "subshrub." The feminine form suffruticosa is often used as a descriptive epithet in scientific names, indicating that a taxon exhibits this growth form. It is distinct from a true shrub, which develops persistent woody stems throughout, and from an herb, which is non-woody at the base.

In suffruticose plants, the lower part of the stem is lignified and survives seasonal dieback or even fires, while the upper stems die back or are removed and regrow from the perennating base.
