Substantivalism

Substantivalism is a view in the philosophy of space and spacetime that space or spacetime exists as a substance or entity distinct from and independent of the material objects and events within it. It contrasts with relationalism, which holds that space (or spacetime) is nothing over and above the network of spatial relations among objects.

Historically, substantivalism traces to Isaac Newton, who treated absolute space as a real arena in which objects move. Philosophers such as Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz argued for relationism, claiming space is nothing but the order of relations among bodies. The debate was reinterpreted in terms of spacetime in the 20th century, with substantivalists stressing the ontological status of spacetime points and the backdrop against which dynamics unfolds.

A standard argument for substantivalism comes from thought experiments like Newton’s bucket, which seem to indicate absolute rotation relative to a fixed background. Relationalists reply that all motions are relative and that the effects attributed to absolute space can be explained by relations among bodies and fields, especially within general relativity.

In contemporary philosophy of physics, the debate often centers on spacetime substantivalism versus spacetime relationalism. General relativity is compatible with a range of readings, though it features a dynamical spacetime that interacts with matter. Some philosophers distinguish between manifold substantivalism (where points of the spacetime manifold have ontological status) and field- or relationist readings that avoid primitive space points.
