Substantiivimainen refers to a grammatical concept primarily found in Finnish linguistics, describing a type of word formation or inflectional process where a noun-like or nominal function is derived from another part of speech, most commonly an adjective. This process contrasts with adjectival inflection, where adjectives modify nouns, and instead transforms adjectives into substantives—words that function as nouns.

In Finnish, substantivization often occurs by adding the suffix *-uus* or *-us* to an adjective, creating abstract nouns. For example, the adjective *kuuma* (hot) becomes *kuumuus* (heat), and *nopea* (fast) becomes *nopeus* (speed). These derived nouns can then be inflected like any other noun, taking plural forms, possessive endings, or case markings.

The process is not limited to adjectives; verbs can also be substantivized, typically by adding *-minen* to form gerunds or verbal nouns. For instance, *juosta* (to run) becomes *juokseminen* (running). This construction often denotes the action itself rather than a specific instance of it.

Substantivization plays a crucial role in Finnish grammar, expanding vocabulary and enabling precise expression.
