Subsantivation is a theoretical concept in argumentation and cognitive analysis describing the process by which a claim is reinforced through a structured set of subsidiary reasons or sub-claims, rather than by direct, singular evidence alone. It focuses on the organizational layering of support, where multiple secondary propositions collectively undergird the central assertion.

Etymology and scope: the term combines a sense of “under” with “substance,” pointing to the idea that the substance of an argument is built from underlying components. Substantive validation, or substantiation, remains the overarching goal, but subsantivation emphasizes how subordinate claims contribute to that validation. The concept appears in discussions of reasoning architecture, debate design, and certain models of automated argument generation.

Mechanisms and examples: in practice, subsantivation involves drafting a main claim and then attaching a network of sub-claims, each with its own supportive evidence, to form a coherent chain of justification. For instance, a policy argument that “Policy X reduces emissions” might rely on sub-claims about technological feasibility, economic impact, and historical analogues, with each sub-claim supported by its own data or testimony. In computational settings, subsantivation can be formalized as a relational structure where sub-claims feed into the primary claim through inference rules or weightings.
