Subperceptual

Subperceptual is an adjective used in psychology and related fields to describe stimuli or information that lie below the threshold of conscious perception. It derives from sub-, meaning below, and perceptual, relating to perception. In psychophysics, subperceptual stimuli are presented in ways that observers do not consciously detect them, or detect them only ambiguously, and are studied to understand unconscious processing.

Subperceptual stimuli are closely linked to subliminal perception and subliminal messaging. In some contexts, subperceptual and subliminal are used interchangeably, while others distinguish subperceptual as referring to the threshold properties of stimuli that may still exert an effect under certain conditions, such as with repeated exposure, high sensitivity, or specific task demands. Researchers test whether such stimuli can influence judgment, memory, or behavior through priming or affective processing.

Empirical findings indicate that subperceptual effects exist mainly as subtle priming influences on response tendencies, rather than as large, directive controls of behavior. The reliability and magnitude of these effects vary with task, stimulus type, masking technique, and individual differences. In everyday applications, claims of powerful subperceptual manipulation are generally unsupported and criticized for ethical and methodological reasons.
