Subfreezing

Subfreezing is a term used to describe temperatures that fall below the freezing point of water, typically 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit). The phrase is common in meteorology, climatology, and everyday weather reporting to indicate conditions cold enough for water to freeze and for frost to form on surfaces.

In weather and climate contexts, subfreezing conditions arise when cold air masses move into a region. Clear skies, calm winds, and radiational cooling at night often contribute to temperatures dipping below freezing. Subfreezing temperatures can persist in rural or sheltered areas even if daytime highs approach or briefly exceed 0°C, and they raise the likelihood of ice on roads, sidewalks, and vegetation.
