Subbasänger is a term used primarily in Scandinavian contexts to describe a vocalist who specializes in unusually low vocal ranges, extending beyond the standard bass register into sub-bass territory. The term is not part of formal vocal classifications in most musicology texts; in English-language scholarship, singers at such lows are more commonly described as basso profondos or as bass voices with sub-bass extensions.

Range and technique: A subbasänger typically operates in the lowest portions of the male voice and may employ techniques such as sustained chest-voice production, deep breath support, precise vowel shaping, vocal fry, and occasionally subharmonics or overtone singing to stabilize and project pitches in the sub-bass region. Individual ability varies, and reliable pitch in this area often relies on amplification in performance.

Repertoire and usage: The concept is most evident in experimental, drone, and certain forms of heavy music, or in cinematic soundtracks where deep-toned vocal textures are desired. It is rarely a feature of standard classical or choral training; most repertoire for deep voices centers on bass or basso profondo roles. The label subbasänger tends to reflect a practical description of a singer's range rather than a formal voice type.

Health and training: Prolonged singing at extreme lows can place strain on the vocal cords, so singers are advised to work with a voice teacher to develop safe techniques and to monitor vocal fatigue.
