Subasio

Subasio is a mountain located in the province of Perugia, in the Umbria region of Italy. It is part of the Umbrian Apennines and is situated east of Assisi. The mountain reaches an elevation of 1,277 meters (4,190 feet) above sea level.

The slopes of Subasio are characterized by Mediterranean vegetation, including olive groves, oak forests, and macchia shrubland. The area is known for its natural beauty and offers numerous hiking trails that attract visitors throughout the year. From the summit, panoramic views of the Umbrian valley, including Assisi and other surrounding towns, can be enjoyed.

Historically, the mountain has been associated with Saint Francis of Assisi. The Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi is located on the western slopes of Subasio, and the hermitages and natural landscapes of the mountain are deeply connected to the life and spirituality of the saint. The Parco Regionale del Monte Subasio was established to protect the natural and cultural heritage of the area.

The park encompasses a significant portion of the mountain and its surrounding territory, promoting sustainable tourism and conservation efforts. Archaeological findings on Subasio suggest human presence dating back to ancient times. The economy of the area is largely based on agriculture, particularly olive oil production, and tourism, drawn by the religious significance of Assisi and the natural attractions of the mountain.
