A hermitage is a dwelling or place of residence for a hermit—a person who seeks solitude for religious, philosophical, or contemplative reasons. The term derives from Latin eremita, through Greek eremites, and Old French heremite, and in English the noun hermitage can also refer to the place itself rather than a person.

Historically, hermitages were part of religious life in many traditions. In Christian practice, hermits withdraw to deserts or remote locations for asceticism and prayer; in medieval Europe, anchorites and anchoresses enclosed themselves in small cells attached to churches or monasteries. Hermits often lived simply and independently, sometimes with limited contact with the community but under a bishop's oversight.

Architecturally, a hermitage may be a compact dwelling, a standalone cottage, or a secluded room within a larger religious building. In gardens and parks of Europe and North America, the term was also used for decorative follies: small rustic pavilions or retreats built to evoke solitude and contemplation.

In modern usage, hermitage can refer to any isolated dwelling used for contemplation, or to the estate's private retreat. The name is associated in Russia with the Hermitage, a major museum complex in Saint Petersburg that originated from Catherine the Great's private imperial apartments and later opened to the public.

Throughout history, the form and function of hermitages have varied, from religiously oriented cells to ornamental garden structures, reflecting evolving ideas about solitude, spirituality, and the relationship between individuals and communities.
