Subakromiaalibursat

Subakromiaalibursat refers to the subacromial bursa, a small fluid-filled sac located in the shoulder. It is one of the largest bursae in the body and plays a crucial role in the smooth gliding of tendons and muscles around the shoulder joint. Specifically, it lies between the acromion, which is a part of the shoulder blade, and the supraspinatus tendon, one of the rotator cuff muscles. This strategic position minimizes friction during arm elevation and rotation.

Inflammation of the subacromial bursa is known as subacromial bursitis. This condition often occurs as a result of overuse or repetitive motions that irritate the bursa. It can also be caused by direct trauma to the shoulder or by underlying shoulder pathologies such as rotator cuff tears or impingement syndrome. Symptoms of subacromial bursitis typically include pain in the outer aspect of the shoulder, which may worsen with overhead activities or lying on the affected side. Tenderness to touch over the affected area is also common.

Diagnosis of subacromial bursitis is usually made through a physical examination, noting the location and nature of the pain. Imaging studies like ultrasound or MRI may be used to confirm the diagnosis and assess for any associated rotator cuff pathology. Treatment aims to reduce inflammation and pain, and often involves rest, ice, pain medication, and physical therapy. In some cases, corticosteroid injections into the bursa may be administered to provide rapid relief from symptoms.
