Styrenebutadienrubber, often abbreviated as SBR, is a synthetic rubber derived from the copolymerization of styrene and butadiene monomers. It is a widely used elastomer due to its excellent abrasion resistance, good tensile strength, and cost-effectiveness. SBR is typically produced through emulsion polymerization, though solution polymerization methods also exist. The ratio of styrene to butadiene can be varied, significantly influencing the rubber's properties. Higher styrene content generally leads to increased hardness and tensile strength, while higher butadiene content improves flexibility and resilience.

The properties of SBR make it suitable for a broad range of applications. Its most prominent use is in the tire industry, where it is a key component in tire treads, sidewalls, and inner liners. Its durability and resistance to wear are critical for tire performance. Beyond tires, SBR finds application in footwear, particularly in shoe soles, due to its abrasion resistance. It is also used in the production of hoses, belts, gaskets, and as an additive to improve the impact resistance of plastics like polystyrene. SBR can be compounded with various fillers, such as carbon black and silica, to further enhance its mechanical properties. It is also often blended with natural rubber to achieve a desired balance of characteristics.
