Studtype

Studtype is a term used in mechanical engineering and product design to describe a category of fastener components that resemble stainless steel rods with threads, designed to join parts without a traditional headed bolt. A studtype component generally consists of a cylindrical shaft with threaded portions at one or both ends and often a smooth shank in between. The classification reflects variations in thread length, end configuration, and seating features, rather than a single universal standard.

Common variants include fully threaded studs, which have threads along the entire length; partially threaded studs, with a near-end shank and a threaded portion near the opposite end; and double-ended studs, which have threads at both ends and may use a nut on each end for clamping. Flange studs and stud bolts introduce seating surfaces or flanges to improve alignment and preload. Materials range from carbon steel and stainless steel to alloy and specialized polymers for corrosive or high-temperature environments.

Manufacturing typically involves turning or thread rolling to create predictable thread forms and tolerances, followed by inspection to verify fit with corresponding nuts or tapped holes. In practice, studtype components are chosen when access to a bolt head is difficult, when spaced attachment points require compact fasteners, or when the assembly must be disassembled repeatedly.

Standards for dimensions and thread forms generally align with established fastener specifications, such as ISO metric, UNC/UNF, or other regional standards, ensuring interchangeability with nuts and tapped holes across manufacturers.
