Stuccoworkers are skilled craftspeople who specialize in the application and finishing of stucco. Stucco is a versatile building material composed of cement, sand, and lime, mixed with water to create a pliable paste. This paste is then applied to interior and exterior surfaces, transforming them into a smooth, durable, and decorative finish. Stuccoworkers possess a deep understanding of the properties of stucco, including its setting times, mixing ratios, and the various techniques required for its application.

The work of a stuccoworker involves several stages. They begin by preparing the substrate, ensuring it is clean, stable, and properly primed to receive the stucco. They then mix the stucco to the correct consistency, often in batches to maintain freshness. Application is typically done in multiple layers, known as coats. The first coat, or scratch coat, is applied thickly and scratched with tools to create a textured surface that will help subsequent layers adhere. The second coat, or brown coat, is applied more evenly to level the surface. Finally, the finish coat is applied, which can be textured or smooth, and may incorporate pigments for color.

Beyond basic application, stuccoworkers are often responsible for decorative elements. This can include creating ornamental moldings, cornices, arches, and even sculptural details using specialized stucco mixtures or by carving the material before it fully hardens.
