Methodology typically involves: inventory of system elements; assessment of essentiality and usage; pruning of nonessential components and connections; design of minimal, well-defined interfaces; iterative testing and validation against requirements; measurement of cognitive load, maintenance effort, and performance impact.

Applications span software architecture, product design, organizational processes, and urban planning, wherever complexity threatens reliability or comprehension. A common example is simplifying a software architecture by reducing the public API surface and removing redundant modules while ensuring key features remain accessible.

Critics argue that overzealous simplification can remove needed flexibility or obscure emergent properties; practitioners therefore balance reduction with preserving adaptability and resilience.
