Stroompje
Stroompje is a Dutch term meaning “little current” and refers primarily to a popular water‑play toy used by children in the Netherlands and Belgium. The toy consists of a series of small, hollow plastic or wooden cups or buckets that are connected by a tube or a simple sealed cardboard channel. Water is poured into the top cup, and gravity forces it to flow through the connecting tube, filling successive cups and creating a visible stream of water that frequently turns into a mini waterwheel or “stream.” The device may have a small motor or be completely passive, relying entirely on the gravitational flow. Its design allows children to observe basic principles of hydraulics, such as pressure, flow rate, and the effect of water volume on speed, in a hands‑on, engaging way.
The stroompje first appeared in the 1970s as part of a Dutch educational initiative to promote science
Today, the stroompje remains a common feature of summer fairs and educational workshops. It is often cited
