Stronsay

Stronsay is an island in the Orkney Islands, Scotland. Located to the east of the Orkney Mainland, it lies among the archipelago’s eastern islands and is separated from its neighbors by straits such as Stronsay Sound. Stronsay is one of the larger outer islands, and it is part of the Orkney Islands Council area and the UK parliamentary constituency of Orkney and Shetland.

The island has a low-lying, grassy landscape with a coastline of sandy beaches, coves, and cliffs. The interior is used for farming and small settlements. The population is in the low hundreds, with the main settlement being the village of Stronsay.

Stronsay has a long history of human activity, with Norse influence visible in place-names and archaeology. The island is also known for local folklore, including the Stronsay Beast, a purported marine creature observed in 1808 that became a notable part of Orkney lore. Today the community maintains a traditional maritime and crofting heritage, alongside growing interest in tourism and cultural events.

Economy on Stronsay traditionally centered on crofting, fishing, and maritime services. In recent years, tourism, seafood, and small-scale renewable energy have supplemented incomes. The island is connected by regular ferry services to Kirkwall on the Mainland, operated by Orkney Ferries, while there is no commercial airport on Stronsay.

The surrounding waters and nearby islands support diverse wildlife, including seabird colonies and seals. Nearby protected areas, such as Eynhallow National Nature Reserve, contribute to conservation and outdoor recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
