Species in the genus form flattened or branching thalli ranging from a few centimeters to tens of centimeters in length. The tissue is composed of polygonal cells bound by flexible silica-based membranes, giving stiffness without brittleness. Pigments include chlorophylls a and c, with accessory carotenoids; some strains exhibit bioluminescence under mechanical stimulation or low light.
