Stressorite

Stressorite is a rare and unique mineral discovered in 2010 within the impact crater of the Sikhote-Alin meteorite in Russia. It is named after the stress it experiences due to its formation process, which involves high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. Stressorite is composed primarily of silicon, oxygen, and hydrogen, with a chemical formula of SiO2·nH2O, where n can vary. Its crystal structure is monoclinic, and it typically forms as small, colorless to white crystals or aggregates.

The mineral's formation is closely linked to the impact event that created the Sikhote-Alin crater. The extreme conditions generated by the impact, including shock waves and high temperatures, led to the transformation of pre-existing minerals into stressorite. This process is known as shock metamorphism, and it is a common phenomenon in impact craters.
