Straßenquerschnitt

A Straßenquerschnitt, or road cross-section, describes the dimensions and components of a road as viewed from a cut perpendicular to its direction of travel. It is a fundamental concept in road design and engineering, defining the physical characteristics of the roadway surface and its immediate surroundings.

The primary elements of a Straßenquerschnitt typically include the carriageway (Fahrbahn), which is the paved surface where vehicles travel. This carriageway is often divided into lanes (Fahrspuren), with each lane having a specific width determined by traffic volume and vehicle types. Alongside the carriageway, there are usually shoulders (Seitenstreifen), which provide a safe area for vehicles to stop or for slower traffic.

Beyond the shoulders, the cross-section can include verges (Bankette), which are unpaved areas that may contain drainage features. Depending on the road type and its location, additional elements might be present. These can include cycle paths (Radwege), footpaths (Gehwege), green spaces (Grünstreifen), or noise barriers (Lärmschutzwände). Drainage systems, such as ditches (Gräben) or storm drains (Entwässerungsrinnen), are also crucial components, ensuring the removal of water from the road surface.

The design of the Straßenquerschnitt is influenced by numerous factors, including the intended function of the road (e.g., highway, urban street), expected traffic load, speed limits, environmental considerations, and available space.
