Stortenbanen are facilities used to unload bulk materials from loaded vehicles by allowing material to fall or be guided by gravity through an inclined track or chute into a lower receiving point. They are commonly used in mining, ore handling, cement production, and bulk waste processing, and can also refer to temporary or permanent installations in rail yards and transfer stations.

A typical stortenbaan consists of an unloading point where the vehicle is positioned, a discharge mechanism (such as a tippler, hinged platform, or gravity chute), an inclined or vertical guide track, and a receiving area (hopper, belt conveyor, or stockpile). The material flows by gravity and is often regulated by adjustable gates, stop-bails, or other controls to manage the discharge rate and prevent blockages.

In mining and ore handling, stortenbanen facilitate rapid unloading of ores, coal, or rock. In cement and bulk-material facilities, they enable transfer from wagons or trucks to storage silos or conveyors. Some installations are fixed, while others are portable or semi-mobile for temporary sites.
