Storagetank

A storagetank is a vessel designed to store liquids or gases, ranging from small units used on-site to large industrial systems. They are employed across energy, water, chemical, food processing, agricultural, and municipal sectors to provide temporary or long-term containment of process fluids. Storagetanks vary in size, configuration, and construction to match content, pressure, temperature, and space constraints.

Storagetanks are classified as aboveground storage tanks or underground storage tanks, and as atmospheric (non-pressurized) or pressurized vessels. Common roof styles include fixed-roof, floating-roof, and open-top designs. Materials include carbon steel with protective coatings, stainless steel, fiberglass-reinforced plastics, reinforced concrete, and high-density polyethylene. Selection depends on chemical compatibility, temperature, and corrosion resistance.

Design features often include containment or secondary containment, interior linings for chemical compatibility, insulation for temperature control, and venting and overflow systems. Level measurement, monitoring, and automation are frequently integrated. Construction and installation follow regional and industry standards, such as API and ASME codes for storage of liquids; NFPA guidelines for flammable materials; and, for drinking-water applications, AWWA or NSF/ANSI standards.

Typical applications include potable water storage, wastewater handling, bulk storage of fuels and chemicals, edible oil and food-product storage, and industrial process streams.

Maintenance and safety considerations include regular inspections for corrosion and leaks, cleaning and sediment control, vent and pressure checks, leak detection, and compliance with environmental and fire-safety regulations. Decommissioning requires proper closure and documentation to prevent environmental contamination.
