Stonnington

Stonnington is a local government area in the state of Victoria, Australia. It forms part of Melbourne’s inner eastern suburbs, located a short distance southeast of the central business district. The city covers a range of inner-suburban communities, including Prahran, South Yarra, Windsor, Toorak, Armadale, Malvern and Malvern East, as well as surrounding neighborhoods.

The City of Stonnington was created in 1994 through the amalgamation of the City of Prahran and the City of Malvern. It takes its name from the historic Stonnington estate in Toorak. Local government is carried out by elected councillors, with a mayor chosen annually to lead the council. The administrative offices are situated in Malvern.

The area is a densely developed mix of residential, commercial and cultural activity. Shopping and dining hubs include the Chapel Street precinct in Prahran and South Yarra, as well as Toorak Road, Toorak Village and Armadale for boutique retail. The city also contains historic architecture, parks, and a variety of community facilities that reflect its urban character.

Transport is well developed, with extensive tram services along major corridors and suburban train access via stations at South Yarra, Prahran and Windsor, linking residents to central Melbourne and other suburbs. Road networks also connect Stonnington with surrounding municipalities.
