Stolesystemer

Stolesystemer, or seating systems, are modular, integrated chair configurations designed for ergonomic support and flexible use. In Norwegian practice, the term covers chairs built from interchangeable modules such as seat, backrest, arms, base, and upholstery that can be combined or swapped to fit different tasks and environments.

Core components include a load-bearing frame, seat and backrest pans, adjustment mechanisms (height, tilt), gas springs or pneumatic supports, arms, bases with casters or glides, and upholstery. The modular design enables mixing sizes, materials, and features and facilitates rapid reconfiguration and maintenance.

Common applications are offices, schools, conference rooms, theatres and arenas, public transportation interiors, hospitals, and other public or commercial spaces.

Design considerations include ergonomics, adjustability, durability, weight capacity, and upholstery safety. Standards and testing address safety, accessibility, and longevity. Life-cycle costs depend on modularity, upgradability, and availability of replacement parts.

Trends include greater modularity, ergonomic research integration, sustainable materials, and smart features such as memory adjustment or built-in device charging. The focus remains on adaptability, serviceability, and total cost of ownership.
