Stofallergie

Stofallergie, also known as house dust mite allergy, is a common allergic reaction to microscopic creatures called house dust mites. These mites thrive in warm, humid environments and are commonly found in bedding, carpets, upholstered furniture, and curtains. Their waste products, particularly their feces, contain proteins that can trigger allergic responses in sensitive individuals.

Symptoms of stofallergie can vary in severity and typically resemble those of hay fever. They may include sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, itchy and watery eyes, coughing, and skin reactions like eczema. In some cases, particularly in asthmatic individuals, dust mite allergens can trigger asthma symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. The severity of symptoms often depends on the level of exposure to the allergens and the individual's sensitivity.

Diagnosis of stofallergie is usually made by a medical professional based on a patient's medical history, symptom presentation, and specific allergy tests. These tests often include skin prick tests or blood tests that detect antibodies to dust mite allergens.

Management of stofallergie primarily focuses on reducing exposure to dust mites and controlling symptoms. Strategies for reducing exposure include regular cleaning, using allergen-proof covers for mattresses and pillows, washing bedding in hot water, and maintaining low humidity levels in the home. Medications such as antihistamines, nasal corticosteroids, and decongestants can help alleviate symptoms. For individuals with severe asthma, inhaled corticosteroids or other asthma medications may be prescribed.
