StocktoSales is a metric used in inventory management and retail analytics to describe the relationship between a retailer's stock levels and its sales. The term, sometimes written as stock-to-sales, measures how much inventory is held relative to net sales and is used to assess whether stock levels are aligned with demand.

Calculation: The basic form is Stock-to-Sales Ratio = Ending Inventory / Net Sales for a period. Net Sales is gross sales minus returns and allowances. Ending inventory is the value of inventory on hand at the period's end. Some practitioners use average inventory (beginning inventory plus ending inventory divided by two) to smooth seasonal fluctuations; the result is the average stock-to-sales ratio.

Interpretation: A high stock-to-sales ratio suggests a comparatively large inventory relative to sales, which can indicate overstocking, slow turnover, or obsolescence risk. A low ratio suggests lean inventory and faster turnover but may raise the risk of stockouts if demand spikes. The acceptable level varies by product category, season, and business model.

Uses and applications: Retail planners use the metric to guide replenishment, open-to-buy planning, and safety stock levels. It complements other measures such as inventory turnover, days of supply, and gross margin return on inventory to evaluate supply chain efficiency, cash flow implications, and assortment effectiveness.

Limitations: Stock-to-sales does not account for product mix, seasonality, promotions, or markdown cycles. It can be affected by inventory valuation methods and pricing strategies. It is most informative when used alongside other indicators and trend analysis over comparable periods.
