The procedure is primarily indicated for patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis, adductor spasmodic dysphonia, or other conditions that reduce medial compression between the folds, leading to hoarseness, breathy voice, or inefficient phonation.

The technique can be performed surgically or through non‑invasive methods.
