Sterrad

Sterrad is a brand of low-temperature sterilization systems manufactured by Advanced Sterilization Products (ASP). It uses hydrogen peroxide gas plasma to sterilize heat- and moisture-sensitive medical devices, offering an alternative to steam or ethylene oxide sterilization.

In a typical Sterrad cycle, instruments are placed in a sealed chamber and air is removed before hydrogen peroxide vapor is introduced. The vapor diffuses through the load, and a plasma stage generates reactive radicals that destroy microorganisms. The cycle ends with drying and venting, and the hydrogen peroxide rapidly decomposes into water and oxygen, leaving no toxic residues on devices.

Sterrad sterilizers are used in hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, and other settings to process a range of instruments, including many metal and some plastic devices. However, material compatibility varies by device, and not all instruments or lumened devices are suitable without prior validation. Some materials or construction features may be degraded by hydrogen peroxide or plasma exposure.

Advantages of Sterrad systems include low-temperature operation, relatively short cycle times, and the absence of residual toxic chemicals compared with some older low-temperature methods. Limitations include potential incompatibility with certain device geometries or materials, the need for routine validation of compatibility, and ongoing equipment and consumables costs.

The Sterrad line has regulatory clearance for sterilization of medical devices and is used widely in healthcare facilities. It represents a mainstream option among low-temperature sterilization technologies alongside alternatives such as ethylene oxide and peracetic acid systems.
