Sternbergia

Sternbergia is a genus of bulbous perennial plants in the family Amaryllidaceae. The genus is native to the Mediterranean region, from Spain and Italy east to Turkey and Iran. The plants are typically found in dry, open habitats such as meadows, grasslands, and rocky slopes.

Sternbergia species are characterized by their dark green, strap-like leaves that emerge in autumn after the flowers have faded or with the flowers themselves. The flowers are usually yellow, trumpet-shaped, and appear in late autumn or early spring, depending on the species and location. The bulbs are tunicated, meaning they are covered in papery layers.

The genus contains several species, with the most commonly known being Sternbergia lutea. This species is widely cultivated for its cheerful yellow autumn blooms. Other species include Sternbergia colchiciflora and Sternbergia fischeriana. They are often mistaken for crocuses due to their similar blooming times and flower shapes, but they belong to a different family.

Sternbergia are generally hardy plants that prefer well-drained soil and full sun. They are often planted in rock gardens or borders where their autumn or spring display can be appreciated. Propagation is usually done by dividing the bulbs. The genus is named after the Bohemian naturalist Kaspar Maria von Sternberg.
