Steigleitern

Steigleitern are ladders designed for vertical ascent, used in a variety of contexts where access to elevated positions is required. The term, common in German-speaking regions, combines steigen (to climb) and Leiter (ladder). The plural Steigleitern covers both portable ladders and fixed installations intended for climbing rather than leaning.

Construction and variants: Steigleitern typically consist of two parallel rails connected by regularly spaced rungs (Sprossen). They may be made from aluminum or steel for durability and lightweight handling; wood is found in older equipment. Portable Steigleitern can be extendable or folding, while fixed variants are mounted on buildings, platforms, or machinery for permanent access. Some models include features such as anti-slip feet, locking mechanisms, or safety rails to aid secure use.

Use and applications: These ladders enable ascent and descent in industrial settings, maintenance work, construction sites, and rescue operations. In firefighting, the term is often associated with high-reaching ladders mounted on fire engines or attached to façades to reach upper floors or windows. Steigleitern differ from leaning ladders (Anstellleitern), which rely on a surface for support and are typically used at different angles and in different contexts.

Safety and regulation: Proper use requires adherence to load ratings, securing the base, maintaining three points of contact, and using fall protection where mandated. Regular inspection is important to identify corrosion, cracked rungs, or faulty locking mechanisms.
