Statistikern is a professional who specializes in the collection, analysis, interpretation, and communication of data. Statisticians apply mathematical theory and statistical methods to extract evidence, quantify uncertainty, and inform decision-making across a wide range of domains, from public policy and health to business and social sciences. They may work with sample surveys, experiments, administrative data, or observational studies, always aiming to produce reliable inferences from data.

Typical duties include designing studies and sampling plans, cleaning and organizing data, performing descriptive and inferential analyses, building predictive or explanatory models, and presenting findings to non-technical audiences. They assess model assumptions, validate results, and communicate uncertainty and limitations. Collaboration with domain experts—such as epidemiologists, economists, or engineers—is common to ensure that analyses address real-world questions and that conclusions are appropriately interpreted.

Education and skills are central to the role. Most statisticians hold a university degree in statistics, mathematics, data science, or a related field, with many positions requiring or preferring advanced degrees for research or specialized work. Proficiency in programming (for example R or Python), data management (SQL), and data visualization is typical, along with knowledge of methods such as regression, experimental design, hypothesis testing, time-series analysis, Bayesian statistics, and machine learning at a basic to intermediate level. Ethical considerations, including data privacy, reproducibility, and avoiding bias, are integral to professional practice.

Statisticians work in government agencies, healthcare, finance, technology, academia, and industry, contributing to evidence-based policy, product development, and quality improvement.
