StandUpPaddling, commonly abbreviated SUP, is a water sport in which a person stands on a board and uses a single-bladed paddle to move across the water. SUP can be practiced on oceans, rivers, lakes, and bays. The modern form emerged in Hawaii in the mid-20th century and gained global popularity in the 2000s, evolving into recreational paddling, fitness, touring, surfing, and competitive racing.

Equipment ranges from inflatable boards to rigid fiberglass or composite boards, all sized to the paddler and water conditions. A paddle of adjustable length is used; many paddlers wear a personal flotation device and carry a leash to connect to the board. Paddling accessories may include a pump, repair kit, fins, and a deck bag.

Basic technique emphasizes a stable stance with feet about shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and a centered weight between both feet. The forward stroke involves rotating the torso and drawing the blade from front to back at an angle. Turning and stopping rely on edging, lean, and different paddle strokes. Regular practice improves balance and core strength.

Safety considerations include wearing a PFD on many waterways, using a leash when conditions are rough or currents exist, checking weather and tide forecasts, and starting on calm, protected waters. New paddlers should learn self-rescue, re-entry from the water, and basic navigation before venturing far from shore. Hypothermia risk is noted in cold climates.

SUP is used for recreation, fitness training, coastal cruising, touring, and SUP yoga. The sport also includes racing and surf-specific disciplines. Governance and event organization occur through national paddle organizations and international bodies that establish safety standards and sanction races, clinics, and demonstrations.
